19 世纪末，上海官商云集。赛金花原是状元洪钧之妾，夫逝后到沪开“金花书寓”，结识荣禄、盛宣怀、魏斯炅等。大阿哥逼其关书寓，她索得补偿后离沪赴京重开，借荣禄与杨玉舫之力渐火。八国联军入京，她被李鸿章看中与瓦德西交涉，后却入狱。出狱返沪，家财尽，孙作舟离去，盛宣怀、大阿哥等前来刁难。末路时魏斯炅归来，摆平困境求婚，恰逢《孽海花》出版大卖，赛金花终披婚纱，在众人簇拥下绽放光芒。
