来自柏林爱乐乐团的十二位大提琴家，这个组合在国际音乐界中一直以来都有着显赫的地位。1972 年，在广播节目制作中，柏林爱乐的十二位大提琴家录制了克伦格尔的作品《赞美诗》——这成为了这一组合成立的原动力，他们卓越的音色和精湛的技艺很快征服了全世界的音乐听众。如今，“十二位大提琴家”在国际上已经享有极高的声誉。无论是演奏经典、爵士、探戈还是先锋音乐，听众无一不被这十二把大提琴演奏出的独特而令人陶醉的音色所吸引，他们的演奏既严肃又幽默，既深沉又轻快，吸引着各个年龄段的听众。曾为“十二把大提琴”专门谱写作品的当代作曲家包括：鲍里斯·布拉赫尔、塞巴斯蒂安·柯里尔、布雷特·迪恩、谭盾、佩特·埃特沃斯、让·弗朗赛、索菲亚·古拜尔杜丽娜、克里斯蒂安·约斯特、威尔赫姆·凯撒-林德曼、阿尔沃·帕尔特、沃尔夫冈·里姆、凯亚·萨莉亚霍、弗朗西斯·阿里·萨德、皮特里斯·瓦克斯、扬尼斯·谢纳基斯和乌多·齐默尔曼。他们还曾作为柏林大使陪同德国总统出访。他们的 CD 常常登上各大榜单，并分别于2001年、2005年和2017年获得古典回声奖。

这个组合是独一无二的。当然，每个交响乐团都有自己的大提琴声部，然而世界上没有任何其它地方可以拥有比柏林爱乐乐团更深厚、更大型的弦乐室内乐团——来自乐团内部的又一个乐团——迎来了一次又一次的成功。这就是为什么每个音乐爱好者即使在不知道乐团名字的前提下，也能立刻知道“十二位大提琴家”来自何方。

自1972年以来，他们以室内乐团的形式进行合奏演出，经常于柏林本地及世界各地进行专场演出和周期性的大规模巡演。这些年来，乐团的成员虽然发生了变化，创始成员退休、年轻同事接任，但在 “十二位大提琴家”的历史中，延续和更迭却造就着颇丰的成果——人们足以从聆听中亲身体会。
