全剧以西晋史学家陈寿著写三国志的人生经历为创作素材，表现他在著史过程中的艰难坎坷，以及渴望家国统一的情怀。

陈寿以史家的品格和求真务实的著史态度，不违心、不违史、不媚上、不苟且，他在官场遭受打击贬谪，内心痛楚失落，甚至罹患眼疾，但仍然笔耕不缀……十年寒窗完成了历史巨著《三国志》。

《三国志》充分彰显了东汉末年百年纷争的政治军事谋略，将由乱到治的天下一统娓娓道来。而三国历史文化中，正是先有了陈寿的《三国志》，才有罗贯中的《三国演义》。
