保罗·斯特宾是英国TNT剧院和美国欧洲戏剧团的艺术总监。1980年成立TNT剧院，获得英国艺术理事会定期发放的基金。保罗为诺丁汉剧院和TNT剧院演出过，还为南约克郡剧院、格拉斯哥的“模范组合”、慕尼黑的泰姆士剧院、圣彼得堡的国立喜剧院，雅典音乐厅（中央大厅）以及俄国的实验剧场编剧并导演过作品。他的作品曾在世界各地超过30个国家巡回演出。
保罗说：“我们一直在问自己，《驯悍记》的主题是什麽，我们要表达什麽?表面上看，《驯悍记》是一个直白的喜剧，讲述男人和女人关系的古老主题。几个世纪以来，凯特的热情、活力和独立震撼了无数观众，但她遭受的羞辱和最终的降服却让女性观众感到困惑和愤怒。因此很多现代版本的《驯悍记》都力图淡化甚至消除剧中的男性沙文主义色彩。但我认为《驯悍记》所以为《驯悍记》，就因为它表现了那个男女不平等的时代。虽然囿于时代的局限，莎士比亚认同男尊女卑，但他也以慈悲之怀嘲讽了男人的愚蠢和贪婪。在我们的创作中忠实地保留了莎士比亚的嘲讽和幽默，但和男尊女卑的理念划清了界限——不是通过削弱剧中的大男子主义色彩，而是将其演绎到极致以揭示沙翁所处的时代。”
