Sammy Hagar最初是个职业拳击手，在60年代末放弃了拳击生涯后，他开始在加州与Skinny，the Fabulous Catillas，Justice Brothers 等不同风格的乐队共同演唱，凭借着自己的出色表现，Sammy Hagar逐渐在加洲Hard Rock 圈里创出了些名堂1973年，Sammy Hagar受吉他手Ronnie Montrose之邀加入Montrose乐队，并与Montrose一起共同完成了两张录音室内专辑。1976年，Sammy Hagar组建了自己的乐队，开始自己的独唱生涯，他同年以Sammy Hagar的名义发表首张专辑 Nine on a Ten Scale。到1979年，Nine on a Ten Scale已经成为一张金唱片（销量达到50万张）。在 1985 他加 入Van Halen 前，Sammy Hagar 和他的乐队最出名的专辑是 1981 年的 Standing Hampton和1982年的Three Lock Box，前者的销量达100万张，成为白金唱片；后者也成为一张金唱片。Sammy Hagar此段时间还拥有一首Top 13歌曲，Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy，他1984年专辑中的单曲 I Cant Drive 55上了排行榜的第26位。
