After Forever在1995年成立时是使用“Apocalypse”作为团名，曲风较为接近死亡金属。1997年女主唱Floor Jansen加入后，为了更强调她的歌声，曲风于是加入了更多哥特金属的元素。这时的团员为Floor Jansen、Mark Jansen、Sander Gommans、Luuk van Gerven、Jack Driessen 和 Joep Beckers。1999年乐团开始写曲，并录制了两张Demo---《Ephemeral》和《Wings of Illusion》，这两张Demo引起了唱片公司Transmission Records 的注意，之后与乐团签下合约。首张专辑《Prison of Desire》在2000年发行，专辑还邀请了诱惑本质（Within Temptation）的主唱Sharon den Adel参与录音。专辑推出后，在欧洲获得出色的成绩。该年年底，新鼓手 Andre Borgman和键盘手Lando van Gils 加入乐团，取代原来的Joep Beckers与Jack Driessen。 2001年，第二张专辑《Decipher》发行。Floor Jansen受邀担任亚力安传说的客座乐手。2002年，吉他手Mark Jansen 被开除，组成新乐团黯黑史诗。随后新吉他手 Bas Maas 加入。2003年，乐团发行了 EP 和 DVD《Exordium》。2004年，发行了概念专辑《因果孽报》（Invisible Circles）。专辑登上了荷兰排行榜第26名。同年 Lando van Gils 离开乐团，新成员 Joost van den Broek 加入。2005年9月初，他们发行了第四张专辑《Remagine》。专辑分为两种版本，一个是附加三首歌曲的SACD，另一个是附赠 DVD 的特别版。DVD 内容包含相片集和幕后花絮。2006年3月3日，乐团因为唱片公司无法提供足够的宣传，决定离开。因此Transmission Records发行了精选集《Mea Culpa》。同年十月，乐团与Nuclear Blast签下合约。2006年年底乐团录制了在 Nuclear Blast 旗下的第一张专辑《万世沉沦》，请来了歼灭者乐团（Annihilator）的吉他手Jeff Waters和Doro Pesch担任客座乐手。《万世沉沦》在2007年4月23日发行。2008年1月，因为Sander的健康状况，乐团在官方网站上宣布他们将会休息一段时间，时间至少一年。2009年2月5日，After Forever宣布解散。
