张元，1963年10月生于江苏省东海县，毕业于北京电影学院，中国内地男导演。
1989年毕业后个人集资独立制片，拍摄电影处女作《妈妈》[1]。1992年完成中国第一部摇滚影片《北京杂种》。1994年被美国《时代周刊》推选为“21世纪世界百名青年领袖”之一[2]。1995年执导的纪录片《广场》获得美国夏威夷国际电影节“评委会奖”。1997年凭借执导的电影《东宫西宫》获阿根廷国际电影节最佳导演奖。1998年取得国家广播电影电视总局的“解禁令”后摄制电影《过年回家》，凭借此片获得第56届威尼斯国际电影节最佳导演奖[3]。1999年美国哈佛电影档案馆和电影与环境研究系向张元颁发“电影艺术贡献奖”，举办“哈佛向张元致意电影展”。2000年联合国教科文组织在巴黎授予张元“和平文化大奖”。2001年被《中国青年》杂志评选为影响下个世纪的100位青年人之一。2006年获梵蒂冈罗勃特·布莱松奖[4]。
2008年张元因吸食毒品被当场抓获。2014年6月13日再次因吸毒被北京警方拘留[5]。
